Fatal/Near-Fatal Accidents on I-65 Demonstrate the Importance of Wearing Seatbelts

The local news reported the tragic death of a 33-year-old Athensman on I-65 in LimestoneCountyon December 4th.  According to Alabama State Troopers, the passenger of the vehicle was killed in the single car accident. Troopers reported the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The driver of the vehicle, who was wearing a belt, survived. He was subsequently transported to  Huntsville Hospital and then released.

A separate but equally tragic incident occurred on December 8th. Three people were ejected from their vehicle after it rolled over on I-65 North, just before the I-565 interchange.

Two of the occupants, a man and a woman, sustained life-threatening injuries and were airlifted by MedFlight toHuntsvilleHospital. Another man was ground transported toHuntsvilleHospitalwith less severe injuries.

According to Huntsville Emergency Medical Services Chief of Operations, Don Webster, none of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the rollover.

The car accident attorneys at Wininger Law Firm encourage you to protect yourself and your loved ones by making sure that everyone in your vehicle fastens his seatbelt securely. Drivers and passengers who neglect to buckle up are especially vulnerable to lethal injuries during a rollover accident.

Department of Transportation statistics show that that wearing a lap/shoulder belt reduces the risk of “fatal injury to front-seat passenger occupants by 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent.”
