David Wininger and “Blue Moon” Odum

David Wininger with John “Blue Moon” Odom. Odom was signed as a hard-throwing right hander to a professional baseball contract by Charles O. Finley of Ensley, AL who had acquired ownership of the Kansas City Athletics, also referred to as the A’s. The same team later moved to Oakland, CA where it won three consecutive World Series Championships in the early 1970s.  Our Senior member David Wininger was interviewed by Birmingham Public Radio concerning the return of some members of the 1964 Birmingham Athletics to the city where they played for the AA baseball team that year.  For most of them, it was the first time to visit Rickwood Field, America’s Oldest Ballpark, since they played here.  Many wives were also present.  Pitcher Joe Grzenda met his wife, a native of Fayette County, Alabama, while playing for the A’s.  We have been informed that the interview will be aired on Saturday, May 18 on 90.3 WBHM.
